|E-Waste Recycling Drive Being Held May 19||5/2/2012|
In an effort to promote waste reduction and support North Carolina legislation, Fayetteville Beautiful is partnering with the City of Fayetteville and Sustainable Sandhills to host an electronic waste (e-waste) drive and compost bin and rain barrel sale which will be the first of its kind within the city limits. Recycle your old electronics at the Westwood Shopping Center (grassy area across fromthe cinema) on Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Accepted items include televisions, computers and monitors, computer peripherals, keyboards, printers, scanners, cables, telephones, cellular phones, video games and game systems-basically, anything that operates on batteries or has a plug with the exception of white goods (stoves, refrigerators, air conditioners, washer/dryer, etc.), radioactive material, lamps, batteries and CRT televisions larger than 27.” American Greenz, a North Carolina e-waste company, will collect, transport and process the e-waste.
North Carolina legislation that became effective July 1, 2011, prohibits the disposal of computer equipment and televisions in landfills. Electronics contain many recyclable materials to include: plastics, glass and precious metals. If not disposed of correctly, electronics can leach heavy metals, chemicals and other materials that can harm the environment and our health
In addition to the e-waste event, our team has partnered with Norseman Environmental to offer the Earth MachineTM Backyard Compost bins and SYSTERN rain barrels at deeply discounted rates ($47/$58 respectively) on a first come, first served basis, while supplies last. The Earth Machine is a user friendly compost machine which allows residents to easily compost food scraps and turn them into a useful soil amendment. Rain barrels will help you reduce the expense of outdoor watering, as they allow you to harvest and store rain water to be used for watering your flowers or shrubs. A drip hose can be attached to make watering your plants low cost and low input. Paper shredding will also be available between the hours of 10 a.m.-1 p.m. by Pro-Shred.
