The Planning & Zoning Division is a Division of the Development Services Department responsible for land development review and approvals, as well as long-range studies and plans that provide guidance and vision to the City for the next twenty years.

A current Zoning Map can be viewed through the Encode version of the City Code by selecting the "Maps" menu option. Printed copies may also be ordered through the Planning & Zoning Division, by calling: (910) 433-1612.
You can confirm the current Zoning or request a Zoning Verification Letter for a particular site by calling Zoning staff at (910) 433-1062 or (910) 433-1767. A fee may be charged.
Zoning staff are often the first and sometimes the only point of contact for many people. Staff review requests for Sign and Fence permits, Setbacks and other site-related standards, for everything from storage sheds to new commercial industrial buildings. The also handle daily inquiries about the Zoning of a particular piece of property and how it can be used.

Planning staff support several commissions charged with reviewing development proposals and making recommendations to the City Council. The boards and commissions most directly involved with development regulations or land use decisions are: the Planning Commission, the Zoning Commission, and the Board of Adjustment. Staff also support the Historic Resources Commission, Public Arts Commission, and the City-County Joint Appearance Commission.
