Airport Receives Green Business Certification 11/23/2011

(Fayetteville, N.C.) – Fayetteville Regional Airport has been named a Sustainable Sandhills Certified Green Business. The Airport, which services three major airlines and 12 local counties, has taken the initiative to reduce its environmental impact and follow more sustainable practices.

Along with requirements for stormwater and hazardous waste disposal, the staff of the Fayetteville Regional Airport utilizes green cleaning supplies, provides numerous recycling receptacles in public areas, and even keeps outdoor smoking areas and cigarette butt receptacles looking tidy. Staff is now using two electric carts to reduce the use of gas powered vehicles and expects to receive delivery of two more electric carts next year.

Airport maintenance staff has installed computerized control systems for the terminal’s central boilers and air conditioning compressors, as well as a lighting control system for the lower and upper levels of the main terminal building. Staff has converted lighting to high efficiency fluorescents and exit signs to LEDs, which provide cost and energy efficiencies. Airport appliances are Energy Star rated and timers have been placed on electronics that are not frequently used.

When remodeling, Airport personnel used low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) paints and supplies.

“Fayetteville Regional Airport realizes the importance of utilizing green initiatives, which is why we have proactively taken a sustainable approach to the way we do business,” Airport Director Bradley S. Whited said. “We’re appreciative of the recognition from Sustainable Sandhills and thank them for their work in the community.”

Green businesses reduce waste, promote recycling, are energy and water efficient, purchase eco-friendly products, and educate their employees and customers about the multiple benefits of a sustainable community.

The Airport is the second City department to be recognized for green initiatives - the Environmental Services Department received certification in 2010.
