Banned Landfill Materials

Effective October 1, 2009,
North Carolina law prohibited the disposal of the following items in landfills:

  • Plastic bottles that have a neck smaller than the body and that accept screw top, snap cap or other closure
  • Used oil filters
  • Wooden pallets

Items already banned from landfills include:

  • Use motor oil
  • Yard trash
  • Appliances
  • Aluminum cans
  • Whole scrap tires
  • Lead-acid batteries
  • Glass beverage containers

Upcoming Bans:

  • Discarded computer equipment – April 1, 2011
  • Discarded televisions – April 1, 2011

City residents are strongly encouraged to help keep these materials out of the landfill by recycling. Multi-family residents can drop off their recycling at the following locations:

Drop off sites for newspaper, magazines and plastic bottles are available at the following locations:

  • College Lakes Park – 701 Tranquil Dr.
  • Fire Station 9 – 5091 Sante Fe Dr.
  • Honeycutt Park – 2605 Ft. Bragg Rd.
  • Massey Hill Recreation Center – 1612 Camden Rd.
  • Fire Station #17 – 6701 Bailey Lake Rd.
  • Full Recycling Centers are located at:
  • Ann Street Landfill – 698 Ann St.
  • Cliffdale Road Container Site – 7581 Lowell Harris Rd.
