(Fayetteville, N.C.) – In North Carolina, beavers have caused millions of dollars in damage to roads, agriculture and timberland, drainage systems, landscape plantings and other properties each year. To address this problem, the USDA Wildlife Services in North Carolina created the Beaver Management Assistance Program (BMAP) in 1992. BMAP assists public and private landowners in the removal of beavers. The City of Fayetteville Stormwater Division partners with the USDA in this program to provide a service to assist property owners in beaver removal.
To understand how beavers can cause so much damage, one needs to understand the ecology of a beaver. Beavers are the largest members of the rodent family, weighing anywhere from 45 to 70 pounds when full grown. Beavers are primarily nocturnal, but can be seen during the daytime. Beavers are vegetarians, so they eat bark and plants, including important economic crops such as corn and soybeans. Beavers build dams and live in lodges. Dam building is stimulated by running water, so beavers will build a dam to slow the flow of the running water, thus creating a pond. This pond will encourage aquatic vegetation, which adds to the food supply.
Beavers, in a sense, create their own environment. This can cause problems for areas surrounding the beaver, therefore, causing the need for them to be removed. By controlling the beaver population, damage to timber and agricultural crops is reduced, and wetlands and wildlife are preserved. Beavers continuously migrate throughout local urban creeks and streams. In urbanized areas like the city of Fayetteville, beaver removal can help to prevent or relieve flooding and prevent damage to the storm drainage system.
If a property owner suspects beaver activity, he or she should call the Stormwater Hotline at (910) 433-1613 to report the problem. The wildlife specialist that is assigned to the City will then contact the property owner to validate the problem and discuss the actions that need to be taken.
