With the help of local citizens and businesses, Fayetteville has been named “America’s Most Pro-Military Town” by TIME Magazine. Focusing on the volunteer led Army’s Army, with 900 citizen members, and the world’s largest military baby shower held at the Crown in November, TIME senior writer Nathan Thornburg illustrated the city’s dedication to the military.
Thornburg cited the City and Cumberland County’s adoption on Sept. 5 of the slogan “World’s first sanctuary for soldiers.” Later in the article, while discussing politics and war, Thornburg said “being pro-military in Fayetteville is not a red-vs.-blue issue. Mayor Tony Chavonne was quoted, saying, "War is not a political word here."
Groups and organizations make soldiers and their families feel more at home in Fayetteville.
“I get taken care of here better than other places,” says Millie Ferris, 26, an expectant mother whose husband is in Iraq.”
The support from churches, businesses and various other organizations consistently uplifts the troops.
Thornburg finishes the article with, ”The community is bearing the hardships of war with admirable grace and a sense of shared sacrifice.”
